About The Artist
Award-winning artist, craftsman, and educator Joe Cariati has spent over 30+ years mastering the art of glassblowing. As a designer, maker, and mentor, his work is a fusion of precision and timeless beauty, grounded in process and shaped by continual refinement.
His journey began at San Francisco State University with a chance glimpse of molten glass through a chain-link fence, a moment that sparked an immediate pull toward the craft. Like many glassblowers, he found himself drawn into its rhythm, surrounded by others driven by the same intensity and dedication. Glassblowing is known as one of the most demanding disciplines, often taking years to develop even a foundational level of skill. For Cariati, the work has always been about the practice itself, learning, refining, and pushing forward with each piece.
Around 2002, he began producing what would become the Angelic Bottle Collection. Rooted in an obsession with mid-century modern design, the work was driven by a desire to create what he felt was missing. By reinterpreting and modernizing the language of that era, he expanded into additional collections including decanters and barware, each piece balancing form, function, and collectability. With the same mindset, he brought his work to market through design-focused trade shows, positioning his pieces within the world of interiors and high-end spaces.
As his practice evolved, Cariati grew his studio into a 10,000-square-foot warehouse space in Los Angeles, where every piece continues to be hand-blown. The studio operates with an open-door philosophy, a place where people gather, exchange ideas, and collaborate. His approach embraces efficiency, economy of movement, and the repetition required to master a craft. The focus is not perfection, but progression, doing more, refining through action.
His work is a blend of tradition and modernity, where the elegance of mid-century design meets the discipline of Venetian technique. Through an ongoing commitment to craftsmanship and innovation, Cariati continues to push his medium forward, creating pieces that are both timeless and deeply considered.
